• A Cassius blue weighs less than a grain of rice, yet its wings beat 12 times per second — so fast that slow-motion cameras were needed to prove it wasn't hovering motionless. This tiny butterfly (wingspan just 12–16 mm) generates enough lift with those gossamer wings to navigate hurricane-force winds in the Florida Keys, where it rides thermals others can't perceive.
• The caterpillar of this butterfly lives inside seed pods of mimosa and acacia plants, eating the developing seeds from within — a strategy so specialised that the plant may evolve defences against it over centuries, in an arms race only visible through generations. Few insects can claim such a precise culinary preference.
