• Roughly one quarter of all male-female encounters end with the female consuming the male. This proportion reflects the species' tendency toward sexual cannibalism during mating. Outside of reproduction, any individual - regardless of age or sex - will attack and eat a conspecific if the chance arises, making opportunistic cannibalism a regular part of its behaviour. Such aggressive feeding can occur at any life stage.
• Mature females possess wings that stop at about three-quarters of the abdomen length, a condition called brachypterism. Both sexes bear a dark dot on each forewing, a marking that may be hidden in darker colour morphs, and a similar wing reduction appears in Iris oratoria, which can be distinguished by large eyespots on its hind wings.
• The mantis displays a dusty brown, gray or green hue that serves as camouflage in its surroundings. From the first instar, the nymph can alter its colour during each molt to match the current environment, and it continues this adjustment through successive molts until adulthood. This ability lets it blend with foliage after every growth stage, enhancing its concealment from both prey and predators. Colour change is therefore a key survival tool throughout its life.
• The egg cases of the Carolina mantis, called oothecae, are available for purchase in garden supply centres so that gardeners can introduce them as a biological control against pest insects. By releasing the hatching nymphs, growers encourage a predatory insect that will hunt a variety of garden-dwelling bugs. This practice is especially popular in the mantis' native range along the eastern coast of the United States, where it naturally occurs.
