Their enormous compound eyes sit on the sides of a triangular head, giving them a blind spot only directly behind. This extreme mobility lets them track prey moving anywhere in their peripheral vision while their body stays perfectly still, waiting to strike.
• When a Carolina mantis strikes, its front legs accelerate faster than a fighter jet taking off — reaching speeds of 8 metres per second in just 50 milliseconds. The prey never sees it coming.
