This colour shift is so dramatic it's functionally two different animals wearing the same skin.
• Inside a capped lutung's stomach sits a three-chambered digestive system that fermments leaves the way a cow's rumen does—except the process happens in a pouch so large it takes up a third of their body weight. They can extract nutrients from toxic, unripe leaves that would poison most primates. This stomach is so heavy it shifts how they move through branches, forcing them to be cautious climbers despite their size.
• Capped lutungs live in troops of 10–50 individuals led by females, not males, and resident males can expect to be violently evicted once they reach sexual maturity. Dominant females control all mating rights and can prevent other females from breeding altogether—a hierarchy so strict that sons are born doomed to exile.
