• A male Cape weaver builds up to 25 nests in a single breeding season, yet most will never house a mate—she inspects each one and tears down the ones she rejects. His survival depends on construction quality: a female will examine the stitching, the thickness of the walls, even the symmetry of the entrance hole. Only the finest architecture earns him a partner, and even then, she may abandon him mid-season if he fails to impress with repairs.
• Their nests hang like woven lanterns from tree branches, lashed together with over 1,000 grass strips pulled and knotted by beak alone. A single nest takes 15 to 20 hours to complete. The walls are so tightly woven they shed rain like fabric, keeping eggs dry through the wettest African storms—a feat of engineering that inspired researchers studying waterproof textiles.
• Cape weavers navigate using the sun's position combined with landmarks, yet they return to the same breeding colonies year after year, sometimes to the exact same tree.
