• A Cape wagtail's tail bobs up and down over 300 times per minute — faster than a hummingbird's wing flap — and each twitch is a deliberate signal. The faster the wag, the more stressed or alert the bird is. Researchers discovered that other wagtails can read these vibrations from metres away, using the tail as a visual alarm system that travels faster than any call could.
