• Cape foxes weigh just 1.3 to 1.9 kilograms — small enough to fit in a shoebox — yet they hunt prey up to the size of young hyrax by using a hunting tactic called mousing: they leap vertically and drop from above onto their prey, using their tail as a rudder mid-jump. This precision pounce lets a 1.5-kilogram predator kill animals three times heavier.
• They are monogamous and stay with the same partner for life, a rare trait among African carnivores. The pair hunts together, sleeps in the same burrow, and the male actively helps raise cubs by bringing food to the den — behaviour more typical of wolves and ravens than of foxes across Africa.
• Cape foxes are nocturnal but crepuscular in winter, shifting their activity to dusk and dawn when it's warmer. This seasonal flexibility lets them live in some of southern Africa's harshest environments: the Karoo semi-desert and grasslands where temperatures swing 40°C between day and night.
