• The California newt's skin produces the potent neurotoxin tetrodotoxin, a compound that is hundreds of times more toxic than cyanide and can kill most vertebrates, including humans. This same toxin is also found in pufferfish and harlequin frogs, linking the newt to other famously poisonous animals. Scientists think the toxin is actually made by bacteria, which the newt acquires by eating those microbes.
• Garter snakes are the most common predators of the California newt, and some snake species have evolved genetic resistance to tetrodotoxin. Those mutations create a selective pressure that favours newts that can produce even higher toxin levels, pushing the snakes to evolve yet stronger resistance. This reciprocal escalation has driven the newts to secrete toxin amounts far beyond what is needed to deter any other predator.
• When threatened, the California newt performs a species-specific "unken reflex", lifting its head and straightening its tail into the air while flashing its bright orange underside. This posture exposes the vivid underbelly as a warning signal to predators. Unlike the related Taricha granulosa, the newt's tail remains uncurled during the display, making the reflex distinctive for the species.
• The California newt can produce three distinct sounds - clicks, squeaks and whistles - that span a wide frequency range. Its vocalisations cover frequencies from 1.4 kHz up to 8 kHz and each burst lasts only a fraction of a second, sometimes as brief as 0.1 s. Clicks are the most common and are emitted when the newt encounters unfamiliar surroundings or confrontations.
