• The buff-tip moth has mastered one of nature's most convincing disguises: it looks exactly like a broken twig. When it folds its wings along its back, the mottled grey-brown pattern and the way it tapers toward the head creates the illusion of a snapped branch lying on bark. Predators looking for a meal see only wood. This isn't camouflage — it's deception so complete that entomologists had to photograph them side-by-side with actual twigs to prove the resemblance isn't accidental.
• Their caterpillars operate like a small green army. Up to 60 buff-tip caterpillars can hatch from a single egg batch and immediately march together in synchronized lines, feeding on birch, alder, and willow leaves in coordinated waves. They move as one unit, stay in visual contact, and can denude an entire branch in days. When threatened, they rear their heads in unison and produce a synchronized clicking sound — a collective alarm that makes predators think they've stumbled into something dangerous.
• Adult buff-tips emerge in spring with a lifespan measured in weeks. A moth that lives 4–6 weeks must compress all courtship, mating, and egg-laying into that window. Females can lay up to 200 eggs in a single batch, often gluing them to the underside of a leaf in one desperate reproductive push before their wings wear thin and they die. For a creature built for one season, the stakes are absolute.
• The moth's scientific name, Phalera bucephala, translates to 'ox head' in Greek — a reference to the bulbous, rounded head that sits beneath those folded wings. In the 18th century, European naturalists were cataloguing moths as rapidly as colonial ships could bring specimens back, and they named this one based on its most obvious feature: that blocky, cattle-like head shape. The name stuck across 250 years and three continents.
• Buff-tips are a marker of healthy woodlands. They're absent from heavily managed forests and monoculture plantations, but abundant wherever birch and alder grow wild along woodland edges.
