• A creature barely 6 millimetres long can leap 40 times its own body length — equivalent to a human jumping 80 metres across a football field. The springtail's tail, called a furca, is a coiled spring of chitin that launches it skyward when danger arrives. In one frame it's crawling through leaf litter; in the next it has vanished into the canopy of a moss clump. This escape reflex is so fast the human eye can barely track it.
• Belted springtails don't have lungs or gills — they breathe directly through their skin, which means they must live in damp soil or they desiccate within hours. This 6 mm animal is locked to moisture the way a fish is locked to water. Yet across Europe and Asia, wherever woodlands stay wet enough, they thrive in staggering numbers: a single square metre of forest floor can hold thousands. They are invisible architects of the soil, breaking down fungi and algae that would otherwise smother plant roots.
• The belted springtail's segmented body is wrapped in distinctive bands of darker pigment — hence the 'belted' name — but these aren't just for looks.
