Fascinating facts about the Buff Ermine

• The buff ermine's wing pattern ranges from almost spotless to heavily melanic, with some individuals bearing only a few scattered dark spots while others are covered in extensive black markings. Its wings are a buffish yellow, the males tending to be brighter than the females, and measure 34-42 mm across. Adults are on the wing from May to July in the British Isles and are drawn to artificial lights at night.
• The buff ermine inhabits the entire temperate belt of the Palearctic, extending from northern Turkey and Georgia across Kazakhstan and southern Siberia, and further east through Mongolia, the Amur Region, China, Korea and Japan. It is a moth belonging to the family Erebidae.
• The Sicilian subspecies Spilarctia lutea rhodosoma is distinguished by a higher number of black spots on the upperside of its wings compared with the nominal form. In addition to the increased spotting, this form is especially noted for its bright red abdomen, a striking colour contrast. It occurs on the island of Sicily, where these colour traits set it apart from other regional populations.
• The buff ermine caterpillars are pale brown and densely covered in hair, giving them a distinctive fuzzy appearance. They are polyphagous, consuming a broad assortment of trees as well as many shrubs and herbaceous plants throughout their range. This flexible diet lets the larvae exploit whatever vegetation is available in the varied habitats they occupy. After feeding, they spend the winter months in the pupal stage before emerging as adults.
