• Male broad-bodied chasers acquire a striking blue pruinosity that completely masks the underlying brown of their abdomen. This blue coating appears only on the male, while females keep the natural brown abdomen marked with yellow side patches. Both sexes share the species' characteristically broad, flattened abdomen, measuring about 39-48 mm in length. The vivid colour difference lets observers tell the sexes apart in the field.
• Historically its range did not extend into Scotland, but it has colonised north there in recent decades. Today the species is recorded in southern Scotland as part of a broader northward expansion that also reaches southern Sweden and southern Finland. Its overall distribution covers central and southern Europe, central Asia and the Middle East, showing how the dragonfly has spread beyond its former limits.
• Mating occurs on the wing and the pair are in tandem for only a brief period, often less than a minute. After this short aerial coupling the two separate, and the female immediately seeks a stretch of open water with submerged vegetation to lay her eggs. She oviposits while hovering above the water, dipping the tip of her abdomen into the surface to deposit the eggs. This rapid, in-flight oviposition ensures the eggs are placed in suitable aquatic habitat.
• Broad-bodied chaser larvae develop hidden in the soft silt and detritus at the pond floor, with only their heads and eyes exposed as they lie buried in the mud. After the eggs hatch in four to five weeks, the young spend between one and two years in this concealed state before they are ready to emerge.
