Fascinating facts about the Blue Monkey
- Half of a blue monkey's diet is fruit, figs and other sweet treats, while leaves and insects supply the protein they need, and the remainder comes from seeds, flowers and fungi. By swallowing fruit whole and later excreting the seeds far from the parent tree, they act as living seed-dispersal machines, helping maintain the diversity of the very forests they depend on. Their reliance on a few fruiting species means that forest richness directly controls monkey density.
- Blue monkeys live in female-philopatric troops: daughters stay in their birth group while adult males leave to seek new harems. Groups can swell to as many as 40 individuals, usually one dominant male with several females and their infants. When a newcomer defeats the resident alpha, he takes over the troop, gaining exclusive breeding rights and a ready supply of food and protection for his future offspring, a high-stakes game that reshapes the social map each takeover.
- Blue monkeys often team up with red-tailed monkeys, joining mixed-species bands that can last six to seven hours a day. In these alliances they groom each other and move through the canopy together, gaining extra eyes to spot leopards or snakes. Because the two species forage in different vertical layers, they avoid direct competition while still sharing the safety of numbers.
- Females give birth roughly every two years at the start of the rainy season after a five-month gestation, delivering fully furred, open-eyed infants. Though only one male mates with the troop, a behavior called alloparenting that lets infants learn social skills early.
- Blue monkeys measure just 50-65 cm (20-26 in) from head to hips, not counting a tail almost as long as the body, and females tip the scales at a little over 4 kg (8.8 lb) while males can reach up to 8 kg (18 lb).
