• Below 600 metres, the ocean is pitch black — yet the blue dragonfish hunts with eyes that see red light no other fish can detect. Most deep-sea creatures are invisible to red wavelengths, but the dragonfish produces its own red bioluminescence from photophores below its eyes, turning prey that thought themselves hidden into glowing targets. It's like hunting with night-vision goggles in a world where no one else has the technology.
• Its teeth are so large they don't fit in its mouth — the fangs protrude past the closed jaw like a swordfish's blade. These needles anchor in sockets that extend beyond the skull, and the fish can unhinge its lower jaw to a 120-degree angle. A dragonfish strikes with the acceleration of a bullwhip, pinning prey in milliseconds in water where a single meal might be weeks apart.
• The dragonfish's stomach is jet black and lined with melanin, not muscle — a hunter's trick that prevents prey bioluminescence from leaking light and giving away its position to larger predators above. Swallow a glowing lanternfish, and the dragonfish doesn't glow back. It absorbs every photon, turning its own gut into a light-proof vault.
• At barely 15 centimetres long, the female dragonfish is five times heavier than the male, who doesn't even hunt — he survives on stored fat and dies within months of breeding. She is a killing machine built for scarcity; he is a reproductive appendage.
