Fascinating facts about the Blobfish

• The blobfish lives deeper than Mount Everest is tall — around 1,200 metres down, where the pressure is 120 times stronger than at sea level. At that depth, its body stays firm and streamlined. But bring it to the surface, and the pressure drops so fast that dissolved gases inside expand like a shaken soda bottle, turning it into the gelatinous blob we know from photos. It's not what the fish actually looks like; it's what dying looks like.
• A blobfish has almost no muscle and almost no bone — its body is mostly a gelatinous blob of protein and water, denser than the ocean around it but only just. This lets it hover near the sea floor with almost no effort, like a living balloon anchored by gravity. In a world where swimming costs energy you can't afford to replace, doing almost nothing is the smartest strategy.
• Scientists know almost nothing about how blobfish breed, raise young, or socialise because they live too deep for conventional study. Every specimen we've examined has been dead or dying, hauled up by deep-sea trawlers. We have better photographs of the surface of Mars than we do of blobfish in their actual home — they remain one of the ocean's genuine mysteries.
• The blobfish eats whatever sinks down from above: dead fish, dead whales, crustaceans that stumble past. Food is so scarce at 1,200 metres that it can't afford to be picky, and it can't afford to chase. It waits, metabolising almost nothing, until a meal falls from the light above. A single feast might sustain it for weeks.
• Its closest relatives are sculpin fish found in shallow coastal waters — suggesting that blobfish ancestors lived near shore and slowly moved deeper over millions of years. As they sank into the cold and dark, their bodies simplified: less muscle, less bone, less everything. It's evolution in reverse, trading complexity for survival in a place where nothing else dares to live.
