• A black-striped squirrel can leap 6 metres horizontally without touching the ground — a distance longer than a car is wide. They achieve this by launching from their hind legs with an explosive spring, their tail streaming behind as a balance pole and rudder. The tail's white underside flashes during the jump, possibly signalling to other squirrels that they've landed safely on a branch rather than plummeting into the canopy below.
• Black-striped squirrels are seed smugglers for Southeast Asia's rainforest. Each squirrel buries thousands of seeds in scattered caches across the forest floor every year, then forgets up to half of them. Those forgotten seeds become saplings — a single squirrel can inadvertently plant an entire grove of trees over its lifetime without ever intending to.
• Males have a vocal arsenal of 15+ distinct calls, each one meaning something different: alarm bells for aerial predators, low growls for territorial disputes, and rapid chirps that sound like a tiny machine gun when they're food-focused. A listening squirrel can distinguish which neighbour is calling and how urgent the message is, all without looking. Their voice changes with emotion the way human voices do — panic sounds different from annoyance.
• Black-striped squirrels are the only squirrels in their range with a white stripe that runs unbroken from their nose to their rump. This stripe isn't camouflage — it's advertisement. In the dim, dappled light of the rainforest canopy, the stripe makes a moving squirrel easy for mates and rivals to spot from 30 metres away, and it stays visible even when the rest of the body blends into shadow.
• In Borneo and Sumatra, black-striped squirrels have learned to raid the nests of stinging ants, extracting ant eggs and larvae while barely getting stung. They're one of the few non-primate animals that deliberately seek out insects as a food source despite the pain — a behaviour that may have emerged only in the last few thousand years as they adapted to changes in seed availability across the rainforest.
