• A black skimmer's lower jaw juts out nearly half an inch past its upper jaw — the only bird on Earth built this way. It flies just centimetres above water with that elongated lower mandible slicing through the surface like a blade, snapping shut the instant it touches a fish. The jaw is hinged differently from other birds' to absorb the shock of impact at 20+ km/h without breaking. Evolution gave it a tool so specialized that skimmers can only hunt in a narrow band between dusk and dawn when fish rise toward the surface.
