At just 30-32 cm long with a 77-81 cm wingspan, the bridled tern packs the size of a common tern into a sturdier frame, giving it a more powerful silhouette in flight. Its dark grey upperparts contrast sharply with a white forehead, eyebrows and a bright hind-neck collar, while black legs and bill finish the bold look. Juveniles wear scaly grey backs and pale undersides, a coat that helps them blend into rocky breeding islands before they molt into the adult's striking pattern. This vivid plumage lets birdwatchers spot the species even among similar dark-backed terns, aiding accurate counts that inform marine bird monitoring programs.
The bridled tern's range stretches across the tropical oceans, with the Atlantic subspecies melanopterus breeding from Mexico through the Caribbean to West Africa, while other races occupy the Red Sea, Persian Gulf, Indian Ocean and the vast Pacific. Its presence as a rare vagrant in western Europe.
Bridled terns nest in colonies on rocky islands, digging a simple ground scrape or using a hole to lay a single egg. Males court females by presenting fish. Unlike Arctic terns that hover before diving, bridled terns plunge straight into the water to catch fish.
