• A black mamba can strike and inject venom in 0.25 seconds — faster than you can blink. The venom is neurotoxic and so potent that 20 milligrams (about the weight of a grain of rice) can kill an adult human. A single bite delivers 100 milligrams. Yet it almost never bites unless cornered; most 'attacks' are defensive strikes with the mouth closed, a warning that means *leave me alone*.
• Despite the name, the inside of a black mamba's mouth is jet black — a brilliant threat display it flashes when defensive. The snake itself is usually grey-brown or olive. The inside-of-mouth warning comes from the same logic as a cobra's hood: show teeth, show darkness, signal *I will hurt you* before wasting venom on a creature too large to eat.
• Black mambas move through acacia trees and rocky outcrops at speeds up to 20 kilometres per hour, making them Africa's fastest snake. Their slim body, flattened slightly side-to-side, cuts through branches like a whip. On ground they're still faster than a human sprinting — but they hunt small birds and rodents, not large prey, so their speed is built for escape and pursuit in three dimensions, not for chasing us.
• A black mamba's venom works in minutes because it targets the nervous system directly, paralyzing muscles including the diaphragm — the muscle that controls breathing. Antivenin exists and works, but only if given within hours. Before antivenin was available in the 1960s, a bite from a black mamba was nearly always fatal. Today, with hospital access, survival rates are high — a reminder that venom danger is as much about geography and infrastructure as it is about the snake's toxins.
• Black mambas lay 12 to 20 eggs in a termite mound, rotting log, or abandoned burrow, and abandon them entirely. Hatchlings are 50 centimetres long and venomous from the moment they emerge — no parental care, no practice, just instant survival. They're born into a world where they must hunt alone, and they do, feeding on baby rodents and lizards while staying small enough to escape birds of prey.
