• Twice the size of a house cat, the jaguarundi reaches almost 36 cm (14 in) at the shoulder and can weigh up to 7 kg (15 lb), with some individuals reported near 9 kg (20 lb). Its body length stretches 53-77 cm (21-30 in) and the tail adds another 31-52 cm (12-20 in). This muscular build lets it leap up to 2 m (6 ft 7 in) to snatch birds, a feat more akin to a small dog than a typical cat. Such power helps it hunt a variety of prey while staying agile on the ground and in trees.
• Male jaguarundis can patrol territories as large as 100 km² (38.6 sq mi). In Brazil, females defended home ranges of 1.4-18 km² (0.54-6.95 sq mi) while males used 8.5-25.3 km² (3.3-9.8 sq mi); two Belize males even covered 88 km² (34 sq mi) and 100 km² (39 sq mi). Such expansive ranges mean low population densities, often only 0.01-0.05 individuals per km².
• A single jaguarundi can consume about 400 g (14 oz) of vertebrate prey each day, focusing mainly on mammals, roughly two-thirds of its diet. Rodents such as Oryzomys, Sigmodon and Zygodontomys dominate meals across Venezuela, the Atlantic forests and other regions, while mice of the genera Reithrodontomys, Peromyscus and Liomys are the next most common.
• The jaguarundi's range stretches from central Argentina to northern Mexico, covering more latitude than any other neotropical cat except the cougar. It thrives in diverse habitats, from rainforests and cloud forests to deserts, mangroves and savannas, often staying near water and using cacti for cover in open areas. This adaptability lets it persist in reforested zones, yet its presence in the United States vanished by the early 1990s, with the last Texas roadkill recorded in 1986 and the species declared extinct there in 2025.
• Recent IUCN assessment upgraded the jaguarundi to Near Threatened, estimating only about 13 000 mature individuals worldwide. Its large home ranges, males up to 100 km², mean the species is among the least abundant felids across most of its range, despite being visible during daylight. This status urges targeted monitoring, disease control in domestic animals, and connectivity projects like wildlife underpasses to halt further declines.
