Beautiful Wood-Nymph

Fascinating facts about the Beautiful Wood-Nymph

• The beautiful wood-nymph tricks predators by looking like a splattered bird dropping, a disguise that makes hungry birds think it's waste rather than a tasty snack. This clever masquerade shows how evolution can turn even the most unappealing image into a lifesaver for a tiny insect.
• An adult beautiful wood-nymph spreads wings that measure between 35 mm and 46 mm across, while its caterpillar can grow to a full 40 mm. Those dimensions, recorded by BugGuide, give a concrete sense of the moth's modest but noticeable presence in the garden, helping naturalists spot it among foliage.
• The wood-nymph's larvae munch on a buffet of woody vines and shrubs, Ampelopsis, buttonbush, grapes, hops, and Virginia creeper, as listed in both Wikipedia and BugGuide. Their choice of woody hosts links to the broader pattern that caterpillars on woody plants often evolve camouflage, a strategy that helps them hide among the leaves they eat.
• You'll find the beautiful wood-nymph across eastern and central North America, from the Atlantic seaboard to the Midwest, and on Block Island, Rhode Island it takes to the air from June through August.
• In the north the beautiful wood-nymph produces one generation per year, but farther south it can squeeze out two.
