• A banded surili's stomach is divided into four chambers and stuffed with fermenting leaves — so full that it can weigh nearly a quarter of the monkey's entire body weight. Like a cow, it relies on symbiotic bacteria to break down cellulose, meaning it spends most daylight hours digesting rather than foraging. This bizarre architecture lets it extract nutrition from leaves most other primates can't digest at all, turning it into a living compost heap in the trees.
• Baby suri­lis are born bright orange or pale yellow, glowing against their mother's black fur like a neon beacon in the rainforest canopy. Within weeks, dark bands fade in across their coat until they match the adults — a colour switch scientists believe is a predator trick, since infants in bright coats advertise their location to eagles and snakes. The disguise works: once the stripes appear, predation rates drop sharply.
• The tail of a banded surili is longer than its entire body but carries almost no muscle — it's a whip-thin communication antenna. When a troop (12–30 individuals) moves through the canopy, they hold their tails upright like radio masts, signalling position to each other in the crowded understory where leaves block sight lines. A raised tail means "I'm here, follow me" or "danger spotted." Sever the tail and the troop splinters.
• Banded suri­lis live in stable, female-led groups where the same matriarch rules for over a decade, and rank matters obsessively — subordinate females must eat last and give way at food patches. Yet troops under intense hunting pressure show a collapse in this hierarchy: stress and food scarcity break the social order, forcing females into conflict rather than cooperation. Scientists studying hunted populations have watched entire family structures unravel within months.
• Found nowhere else on Earth except a sliver of rainforest in Malaysia and Thailand no larger than 2,000 square kilometres, the banded surili has lost more than half its habitat since the 1970s to palm oil plantations and logging. Fewer than 7,500 individuals remain in the wild, yet it's rarely the focus of conservation funding — overshadowed by larger primates. Its entire species exists in an area smaller than Luxembourg, and most of the world has never heard its name.
