• Lake Baikal holds 23% of Earth's fresh water, yet only 3,600 Baikal seals live in it — making them the world's only freshwater seal population and one of the most isolated marine mammals on the planet. They evolved here 2 million years ago, cut off from ocean cousins by continental geology, and their DNA shows almost no variation. A single viral outbreak could erase them.
• Baikal seals can dive to 1,400 metres and stay submerged for 70 minutes — deeper and longer than most ocean seals — because their blood holds 50% more oxygen-carrying capacity than land mammals and their spleen can release an emergency oxygen reserve during the deepest hunts. This adaptation meant they could survive in an ancient lake where prey lives in crushing darkness.
• A newborn Baikal seal pup gains weight at 100 grams per day for six weeks, one of the fastest growth rates of any mammal, because its mother's milk contains 45% fat — four times richer than cow's milk. By the time the pup is weaned at 40 days old, it has stored enough blubber to survive the lake's brutal winters.
• Every January when Lake Baikal freezes solid, Baikal seals maintain breathing holes by memory, returning to the same 8–10 spots year after year through 1.5 metres of ice, exhaling into the darkness like sentient pressure valves. If the ice forms faster than expected, thousands can suffocate — a climate vulnerability that already killed 3,000 seals in a single winter in 1998.
• Baikal seals are born on ice floes in February and March after a mother fasts for two months — burning her own body reserves to fuel milk production — because fish beneath the ice is too scarce to hunt. This boom-bust cycle means the population explodes during abundant years and crashes during famines, with no escape route to another lake.
