• A single Australian Spotted Cuscus stretches from nose to tail tip between 41 and 58 cm, with an average of 48 cm, while its bushy tail adds another 37.5-48.5 cm (average 42.7 cm). That means the tail is about 11 % shorter than the head-body length, giving the animal a compact, almost squirrel-like silhouette. Weighing between 7.4 and 9 kg (average 3-6 kg), it is one of the smallest spotted cuscus species.
• From sea level up to the summit of the McIlwraith Range at 820 m, this cuscus makes its home in rainforests, but it also pops up in mangrove fringe palms, freshwater and saltwater mangroves, and even in open forest patches within 500 m of the nearest rainforest. Its ability to travel on the ground and not rely on tree hollows lets it survive in fragmented forest and regrowth, expanding its habitat options beyond dense canopy alone.
• Mothers carry their young in a pouch that holds up to four teats, yet field notes show only one joey usually survives to independence. Pouch young have been spotted in July-September and again in December, indicating a long breeding window that can span most of the year.
• A true rainforest gourmand, the Australian Spotted Cuscus munches on button-wood leaves, figs, native star-apple fruit, and the sweet blossoms of paperbark trees. In captivity it even snaps up small vertebrates, showing a flexible diet that can shift when preferred foliage is scarce. Stable populations are reported by researchers.
• Though mainly nocturnal, it sometimes darts about for brief periods after sunrise. The wedge-tailed eagle and the amethystine python are its chief predators.
