• Australian sea lions spend up to 10 hours hunting at sea but sleep only 1–2 hours a day — and they do it in 18-second power naps while floating vertically in the water. Their brain never fully switches off; one hemisphere stays alert for predators even during sleep. A mother can identify her pup's call among hundreds of others from 100 metres away, yet she'll abandon it for weeks at a time to hunt 300 km offshore.
• Only about 14,000 Australian sea lions exist today, down from hundreds of thousands before European sealers arrived in 1798. They have the longest breeding cycle of any mammal: pups nurse for 18 months, meaning a mother can raise only one pup every two years. A single female might produce only 6–8 offspring in her entire 20-year life — making population recovery painfully slow.
• Male Australian sea lions are tyrants of the colony, weighing up to 360 kg while females top out at 100 kg. During breeding season a bull must hold his territory and harem against rival males without eating for up to six weeks, living entirely off blubber reserves. Losers don't just move on: they often starve or drown trying to reclaim a beach they've lost.
• Their whiskers are 10 times more sensitive than a human fingertip, picking up vibrations from prey fish no thicker than a human hair from 2 metres away in total darkness. Each whisker connects to a nerve bundle that maps the water around them in real time — a biological sonar that works even when their eyes are sealed shut. They hunt in the murky waters of southern Australia where light barely penetrates, making this whiskered sense their lifeline.
• Entanglement in fishing nets kills more Australian sea lions than any disease or predator; around 500 die this way annually from illegal gillnets and rock lobster traps. Only two small populations survive on remote rocky islands in South Australia, both stranded by coastal development and fishing pressure that wiped out mainland colonies. Their future hinges on a handful of islands the size of a few football fields.
