• Australian sea lions run a 17.6- to 18-month breeding cycle that never lines up between colonies, making their reproductive calendar a moving target. Census data collected since 1973 show each breeding event jumps about 13.8 days earlier every 18 months, so colonies drift through the year like a slow-moving treadmill. The breeding season itself can stretch from five to seven months, and at Seal Bay it has lasted up to nine months, squeezing pups into a prolonged, staggered birth window.
• Only about 14,730 Australian sea lions were counted in 2010, but by 2014 the estimate fell to roughly 6,500 mature adults, a drop of more than half in just four years. The species is now listed as endangered, and as of October 2025 roughly 80 % of the remaining individuals live in South Australian waters.
• Sixty-six breeding colonies dot the coastline from the Houtman Abrolhos Islands to The Pages Islands, but 42 % of every sea lion lives in just three sites, Seal Bay, The Pages and Dangerous Reef, east of Port Lincoln. Those three colonies alone produce 42 % of all pups.

This hidden mortality drives adult loss in a long-lived species where adult survival is critical for population stability.
