About the Atlantic Spadefish

The Atlantic spadefish, Chaetodipterus faber, wears a silvery disk-shaped mantle etched with four to six black vertical bands that fade with age, the first of which pierces the eye and the last runs across the caudal peduncle. Its deep, compressed body is crowned by a blunt snout, a small mouth whose maxilla ends beneath the nostrils, and brush-like teeth that lack any roof-mounting counterparts. Nine dorsal spines lead into 21–24 soft rays, while three anal spines support 17–19 soft rays; in adults the second dorsal and anal fins trail long anterior lobes, lending an almost angelfish silhouette. Weighing typically between 3 and 10 pounds, some individuals tip the scales at 20 pounds and stretch to a maximum length of about 36 inches. In the warm, shallow waters of the western Atlantic, from Massachusetts down through the Gulf of Mexico, the Caribbean, Bermuda, and the eastern coast of Brazil, these fish glide among mangroves, beaches, and harbors, juveniles lingering in estuaries before moving to brackish and marine habitats at depths of 3–35 metres. Their diet is a versatile buffet of benthic invertebrates, crustaceans, mollusks, annelids, cnidarians, and planktonic fare from the water column, a feeding strategy that fuels a vigorous summer spawning run from May to September, during which a single female can unleash up to a million eggs that hatch within 24 hours. A surprising trait for such a placid-looking fish is its reputation as a fierce fighter on the line, a quality that has turned it into a coveted game fish for anglers seeking a strong, spirited battle.
