• A gap the width of a pencil runs down the middle of an Asian openbill's beak — and that gap is the whole point. When the bird snaps its beak shut on a freshwater mussel or snail, the two mandibles don't meet. Instead, the sharp edges scissor past each other, letting the openbill slice through shell without wasting energy crushing it whole. Engineers have borrowed this design for surgical tools.
• Openbills gather in colonies so vast that a single wetland can hold 10,000 nesting birds, turning trees white with guano and turning the air into a cacophony of bill-clatters and croaks. During breeding season they paint their legs and faces in shades of pink and red — a flush of blood vessels visible through thin skin — signalling to mates they're primed for raising young.
