Fascinating facts about the Asian Openbill
- Adult Asian openbills possess a distinctive gap between the arched upper mandible and the recurved lower mandible, an adaptation that aids in handling their main prey, large snails. Young birds are born without this gap, gaining it only as they mature. The mandible edges bear a fine brush-like structure that improves grip on slippery shells. Researchers suggest the gap lets the tips strike at a greater angle, increasing the force applied to snail shells.
- Asian openbills are generally resident within their range but will undertake long-distance movements when weather conditions or food supplies change. Ringing studies have documented individuals travelling vast distances, with one bird recovered 800 km east of its capture site at Bharatpur in India. Another specimen ringed in Thailand was later found 1500 km west, in Bangladesh.
- Asian openbills are unusually vulnerable to hailstorms, a risk highlighted by a severe event in Xishuangbanna, south China. During that storm, 45 openbills were found dead, while no carcasses of other bird species were recorded nearby. This selective mortality indicates that hail can cause significant loss to the species even when other avifauna remain unharmed. Such incidents underscore the impact of extreme weather on openbill populations.
- When feeding, the openbill inserts the tip of its lower mandible into a snail's shell opening and pulls the body out while keeping the bill submerged. The bill stays under water throughout the extraction.
- Colonies in lowland Nepal can contain from just five nests up to 130, with an average of 52 nests per colony. Thirteen colonies surveyed showed this wide range in size.
