• A bee-eater plucks a wasp mid-flight, crushes its head on a branch, and discards the venom sac—all in under 3 seconds. They've learned to farm their own food by catching insects at the edge of termite mounds, where insects swarm thickest. Some populations take 200+ insects per day, yet they've evolved a detoxification pathway in their saliva that lets them eat venomous wasps and bees that would kill most birds of their size.
• These birds breed in colonies of up to 300 pairs, tunnelling 1.2 metres into sandy riverbanks with their beaks—and they do this solo, no power tools.
