• Male Ascension frigatebirds inflate a pouch beneath their chin to the size of a beach ball — a balloon of pure red skin that takes 20 minutes to fully inflate. During breeding season, hundreds of males sit shoulder-to-shoulder in trees, balloons swollen, vibrating their pouches like biological tuning forks to attract females. It's the most extravagant display in seabird courtship, and it only works because the female sees it from the air.
• A frigatebird can snatch a flying fish mid-leap from the ocean surface without getting its wings wet. Their wingspan stretches 2.3 metres across — among the longest of any seabird — but they weigh less than 1.5 kg, making them so light they'd sink if they landed on water. This extreme body plan lets them hunt for hours without rest, skimming the surface at speeds that outmanoeuvre prey that evolved to escape larger predators.

Their numbers have crashed from tens of thousands to around 4,000 birds in just 100 years, making them vulnerable to one hurricane, one invasive species, or one oil spill away from extinction. They cannot move their colony; they cannot adapt to breed anywhere else.
• A frigatebird's skeleton is so hollow that it weighs less than its feathers — some bones have walls thinner than paper. This gives them the lowest wing loading of any seabird alive, meaning they can climb to 2,500 metres and soar for 12 hours without flapping a wing. They've been spotted drifting across the Atlantic at night, hunting by moonlight over open ocean thousands of kilometres from land.
