Fascinating facts about the Arabian Oryx

• A reflective white coat that bounces away 60% of the sun's heat, combined with a network of blood vessels in the nose that cools incoming air before it reaches the lungs — the Arabian oryx survives in deserts where ground temperatures exceed 70°C. Their body temperature can climb to 40.3°C without harm, a tolerance that lets them forage in midday heat when predators rest. This is why Bedouin herders called them ghazal, the invisible one.
• In 1972, the last wild Arabian oryx was shot. Fewer than 10 remained alive anywhere on Earth. Operation Oryx, launched that year, brought together zoos across America and Europe to breed them in captivity — the first time humans had saved an animal from complete extinction through coordinated global effort. By 1982, enough had been bred that the first herd walked back into the deserts of Oman. Today roughly 1,000 live wild, all descended from that impossibly small starting group.
• An oryx's hooves are sharp-edged and splayed, designed to dig through sun-baked soil to reach roots and moisture 30 centimetres underground. In drought years, they can survive without drinking for weeks by extracting water from plants and relying on the moisture their nostrils trap from the air they breathe. They move between scattered rainfall zones across 1,000 kilometres of desert, guided by knowledge passed between generations.
• Male Arabian oryx engage in a ritual called sparring: they rear up on hind legs, lock horns, and shove each other with force enough to crack bone — yet injuries are rare. Their horns are thinly tapered, designed to slide past each other rather than catch. When a younger male recognises dominance, sparring ends instantly. This system maintains herd hierarchy without lethal combat in an environment where a deep wound means death from infection.
• The Arabian oryx's ancestors roamed the Arabian Peninsula for millions of years, but within 50 years of industrialisation and sport hunting, they vanished from the wild entirely. Their recovery from extinction proves that even when a species is pushed to the absolute edge, the gap between loss and recovery can be closed — but only if enough humans decide that loss is intolerable. Every oryx alive today is a living argument for that choice.
