Fascinating facts about the Arabian Gazelle

• Arabian gazelles can go their entire lives without drinking water. Instead, they extract moisture from the sparse desert plants they eat—a survival strategy so efficient that a captive gazelle offered fresh water will often ignore it. Their kidneys concentrate urine to almost syrup-like thickness, losing barely 0.5 millilitres per kilogram of body weight daily, compared to humans who lose 10 times more. This means they've evolved to live in places where a water hole might not exist for months.
• In the 1970s, Arabian gazelles were hunted to near extinction—fewer than 20 remained in the wild across the entire Middle East. Today, thanks to an international breeding program called 'Operation Oryx' (which released gazelles back into protected reserves starting in 1982), around 1,000 now roam wild again. It's one of conservation's few genuine comebacks, though they remain vulnerable to poachers and habitat loss.
• A newborn Arabian gazelle becomes a sprinter within hours of birth, capable of running at 60 kilometres per hour to escape predators like Arabian wolves and hyenas. Mothers hide their calves in rocky outcrops or dense shrub for the first week, visiting only at dawn and dusk to nurse—a strategy that minimises the scent trail predators could follow. The calf's camouflaged coat (tan with darker markings) lets it vanish into shadow and stone.
• Arabian gazelles navigate scorching deserts by timing their movement to avoid the worst heat: they're primarily active at dawn, dusk, and night, when temperatures drop from 50°C to survivable levels. Their coat reflects heat while their dark skin underneath absorbs and re-radiates it efficiently. Herds can shift their daily routine by several hours depending on seasonal temperature patterns—a flexibility that keeps them alive as climates shift.
• Males establish territories during the breeding season by standing on their hind legs and thrashing acacia bushes with their horns in a display called 'horning', leaving visible scars that advertise strength to rivals and females. These territorial displays are so intense that a male can break his horns in combat, yet still survive and breed again. The behaviour reveals a gazelle culture where injury and dominance are woven into reproduction itself.
