• After being released in 1970 into Spain's Sierra Espuña Regional Park as a game species, Barbary sheep quickly colonized nearby hills. Recent field surveys show them spreading into the provinces of Alicante, Almería, Granada, and Murcia, turning a single introduction into a regional expansion. Their success illustrates how a species adapted to arid, mountainous habitats can exploit new footholds, but also raises concerns about competition with native Iberian ungulates.
• Scientists in Mexico have harvesting eggs from five captive females, and then cryopreserving the resulting embryos. Using hormone stimulation and surgery, they recovered the embryos and froze them with a Cryotop® device, creating a bank of five viable embryos for future re-introduction or research.
• Barbary sheep can launch themselves over a two-meter fence in a single bound. This agility lets them survive in the steep, rocky mountains of North Africa where predators once roamed.
