Fascinating facts about the Amur Leopard

• Only 70 individuals remain in the wild — fewer than the number of giant pandas, fewer than most zoo populations of any big cat. In the 1970s, fewer than 40 existed. Every Amur leopard alive today descends from a handful of survivors, making them genetically more similar to clones than wild animals. That genetic bottleneck means they're trapped in a race against their own DNA.
• A male Amur leopard's territory spans 1,000 square kilometres — an area larger than New York City. He patrols the same ridges and river valleys for years, marking trees with scent glands and claw marks. If a forest burns or is logged, he has nowhere else to go; there simply isn't another territory within reach. This is why habitat fragmentation is a death sentence for the species.
• Their spotted coat pattern is denser and more complex than any other leopard subspecies — up to 60 rosettes per square decimetre compared to 20 in African leopards. The spots have a pale centre, like tiny flower petals. This isn't decoration: the pattern breaks up the leopard's outline in the dappled light of dense Far Eastern forests, making it almost invisible when it's standing still.
• An Amur leopard can drag a deer weighing 40 kilograms up a tree and leave it wedged in the branches — a reserve meal it returns to for days. They hunt at dawn and dusk in the deep forests of Primorsky Krai, where winter temperatures drop to minus 45°C. Their fur grows thicker than any other big cat's to survive the cold, making them stockier and more muscular than their African cousins.
• Conservation breeding programs have bred fewer than 300 animals in captivity, with strict genetic management to keep bloodlines separate. In 2014, six captive-bred leopards were released into a newly protected Russian reserve — the first time any wild Amur leopard population had increased through human intervention. Today, the wild population has nearly doubled since then, but they occupy a space smaller than a major city, vulnerable to a single wildfire.
