• A tick the size of a sesame seed can wait 2–3 years without food, frozen solid through winter, then wake up and immediately hunt. They survive by slowing their metabolism to a near-halt and producing a natural antifreeze in their blood. This makes them one of the most patient predators on Earth — a single female can lay 4,000 to 6,000 eggs after one meal, turning a single unfed wait into a plague.
• The American dog tick's bite doesn't hurt because it injects an anaesthetic saliva before it feeds. But that same saliva carries bacteria that cause Rocky Mountain spotted fever, a disease that killed 5,700 people in North America before antibiotics arrived in the 1940s. A single tick bite can still be fatal today if untreated — the pathogen spreads so fast that patients have days, not weeks, to get help.
• Ticks find prey using Haller's organ, a pit on their front legs that smells carbon dioxide from up to 10 metres away. They climb to the tips of branches and grass, then drop onto passing mammals — a hunting technique called 'questing'. The longer it feeds — sometimes 10 days on a dog — the more infected saliva it injects. Timing matters: removing a tick within 24 hours can cut disease transmission by half.
