• In 1856, the last alpine ibex on Earth was shot dead in the Gran Paradiso region of Italy — a single animal hunted into extinction in the wild. Forty years later, Italian king Victor Emmanuel II owned the only survivors: 60 ibex in his private royal hunting reserve. Every alpine ibex alive today descends from those 60 captive animals, making them one of conservation's narrowest resurrection stories.
• An alpine ibex's hooves are engineered for near-vertical rock faces: soft, rubbery pads grip like climbing shoes, while razor-sharp edges bite into cracks. They can stand on cliff ledges narrower than a credit card — 2 to 3 centimetres wide — hundreds of metres above ground, safe from predators that can't follow. They're now found at elevations above 4,000 metres where snow can fall any month, trading safety from hunters for survival in a shifting world.
• A newborn alpine ibex weighs just 2 kilograms at birth, yet must follow its mother across precipitous terrain within hours — cliffs are highways, not obstacles. Young ibex develop the same extraordinary hooves and balance instincts in weeks, not months, because predation pressure at lower elevations means those who can't climb die.
