Fascinating facts about the Agile Gibbon
- The agile gibbon is listed as endangered on the IUCN Red List because of habitat loss and capture for the pet trade. Its range is already limited to a few sites on Sumatra, the Malay Peninsula and southern Thailand, so any further habitat loss has a disproportionate impact.
- While most authorities treat the agile gibbon as a single taxon, some primatologists separate it into two ecological types. They recognise a mountain form, Hylobates agilis agilis, and a lowland form, Hylobates agilis unko, reflecting subtle differences in the habitats they occupy across its range. This split is based on observations of variation rather than formal subspecies classification.
- Male agile gibbons are easy to identify by the striking white or light-grey patches on their cheeks, a feature that contrasts with the darker facial fur of females. The white brow that runs above the eyes further accentuates this difference, making the male's face distinctive in the canopy. Males are also slightly larger than females, weighing between 4 and 6 kg and measuring up to 63.5 cm in head-body length.
- Female agile gibbons give birth after a seven-month gestation, producing only one infant per litter. The newborn remains dependent until it is weaned at just under two years of age. After weaning the young stays with its parents until it reaches full maturity at about eight years. At that point it departs the family group to seek its own mate.
- The agile gibbon's natural range is a narrow strip of Southeast Asia, centred on Sumatra southeast of Lake Toba and the Singkil River. It also occupies a small section of the Malay Peninsula and extends into southern Thailand near the Malaysian border. The species lives almost entirely in the canopy of rain-forests, rarely descending to the ground. It is native to Indonesia but can also be found in Malaysia and southern Thailand.
