• A sound most of Africa knows by ear: the African fish-eagle's call is the national bird call of four countries and the ringtone of millions. That haunting, laughing yodel — recorded at 100 decibels — travels across water for kilometres and can be heard over rushing rapids. It's so distinctive that tourists often mistake it for a lion's roar, yet it comes from a bird no heavier than a small dog.
• Perched 30 metres up in a riverside acacia, an African fish-eagle can spot a fish the size of your hand moving beneath water from a kilometre away. When it dives, it reaches speeds of 160 kilometres per hour, then snatches a 4-kilogram catfish from the water without getting its belly feathers wet — its plumage is coated in oil that water rolls off instantly. A single pair can hunt the same 15-kilometre stretch of river for 20 years.
• Young African fish-eagles don't breed until they're 4 or 5 years old, but when they do pair, they stay with the same mate for life — sometimes 20 or 30 years. They build the same massive stick nest year after year, adding to it until it weighs as much as a small car. If their partner dies, they sing differently: a broken, irregular call that sounds almost distressed.
• In the 1960s and 70s, pesticide poisoning nearly erased African fish-eagles from southern Africa and the Great Lakes region. DDT made their eggshells so thin they shattered under the parent's weight during incubation. A ban on the chemical saved them — a complete recovery in some regions within 15 years. Today they're a symbol of successful wildlife comeback and a measure of water health across the continent.
• The African fish-eagle hunts in shifts: males strike at dusk and dawn when fish rise to the surface, while females hunt during midday when light makes prey easier to spot. They've learned to steal from other hunters too — harassing herons until they drop their catch, robbing monitor lizards of fish clamped in their jaws. In one territory, researchers counted a single pair catching and eating over 400 fish in a single year.
