• A single African buffalo can weigh up to 910 kilograms — heavier than a grand piano — yet move silently through tall grass on hooves the size of a human fist. Despite their bulk, they're so light-footed that lions often have no idea a buffalo herd is nearby until the ground itself seems to tremor. This combination of mass and stealth makes them one of Africa's most dangerous animals: they kill more humans annually than any other large herbivore, often by charging without warning from mere metres away.
• African buffalo horns form a continuous shield across the skull called a boss — so dense it can stop a lion's bite mid-attack. A big male's boss weighs up to 13 kilograms and spans nearly a metre from tip to tip. Beneath that armour lies a bone so thick that bullets have been known to ricochet off it. It's evolved weaponry that turns the wearer into a living battering ram.
• A herd of African buffalo can strip bare a landscape in hours, consuming up to 40 kilograms of grass per animal per day.
