• The male Adonis Blue's wings don't contain a single drop of blue pigment—the electric blue you see is pure physics. This iridescence fades within hours of death, which is why museum specimens look dull grey. Evolution spent millions of years perfecting light itself rather than chemistry.
• A caterpillar that eats only horseshoe vetch sounds picky until you learn the plant is toxic to almost everything else. The Adonis Blue larva doesn't just tolerate the poison—it stores it in its own body as armour against predators. Ants farm these caterpillars like livestock, protecting them in exchange for sweet secretions, a partnership so tight that the caterpillar has evolved to communicate in the ants' chemical language.

The entire species replaces itself roughly four times each summer, an evolutionary strategy that lets them respond instantly to good conditions but leaves them vulnerable if a single cold week arrives at the wrong moment.
