• Zebra swallowtails live almost exclusively where pawpaw trees grow, rarely venturing away from these hosts. The butterflies are closely associated with pawpaws, and are rarely found far from these trees, because their caterpillars feed on the leaves and the adults sip nectar and minerals from damp soil. Males will patrol near host plants in search of females, flying swiftly and directly, while both sexes frequently visit a wide range of flowers for nectar.
