Yellow-bellied Three-toed Skink

Fascinating facts about the Yellow-bellied Three-toed Skink

• A 7-inch lizard that can be a mother twice over – in April 2019 scientists watched a single female lay eggs and then give birth to live young in the same pregnancy, a first for any vertebrate, showing evolution can blur the line between egg-laying and live birth.
• When you measure from snout to tail tip, this skink tops out at just 18 cm, yet its orange belly flashes like a sunrise against a brown back, proving even tiny reptiles can sport vivid warning colors.
• High-altitude residents above 1,000 m (3,300 ft) in north-eastern New South Wales skip incubation entirely, delivering fully formed pups in a clear membrane, a strategy that lets embryos stay warm in chilly mountain air.
• Coastal cousins keep eggs for exactly 15 days before hatching, while their near-by mountain relatives shorten that window to about 5 days or drop it altogether, highlighting a rapid shift toward viviparity within a single species.
• Described by John Edward Gray back in 1825 and later placed in its own genus Saiphos, this skink is the sole member of that genus, making it a living textbook for scientists tracing the evolutionary tree of Australian lizards.
