Winter Skate

Fascinating facts about the Winter Skate

• A single winter skate can stretch up to 109 cm (43 inches) long, yet females don’t reach 50 % maturity until they’re about 760 mm and 11–13 years old. Males hit that half-mature mark a bit earlier, at 730 mm and 11 years. This slow-grow-slow-reproduce schedule makes every adult a precious, hard-won resource for the population.
• In the southern Gulf of St. Lawrence, half the skates are mature by age five, but up north the same milestone can take 11–13 years. The stark contrast shows how local conditions squeeze life histories, turning some groups into early breeders while others linger in the juvenile stage for over a decade.
• A winter skate lays about 50 eggs each year, each tucked into a tough, mermaid-purse capsule. Compared with its little-skate cousin’s 30 eggs, this higher output still pales against the massive discard numbers once seen in commercial fisheries.
• From the early 1970s to today, incidental discards of winter skates have fallen from roughly 100 tons to just 1–2 tons per year. The dramatic drop reflects tighter gear regulations, yet even a few stray catches can tip a fragile, long-lived species toward extinction.
• The species’ range in the Southern Gulf of St. Lawrence has shrunk by 99 % since the 1980s, leaving almost no egg cases on local beaches. Such a collapse highlights how quickly a once-common animal can vanish when adult mortality spikes, especially from rising grey-seal predation.
