White-spotted Fantail

Fascinating facts about the White-spotted Fantail

• In 1831 French naturalist René Lesson gave the white-spotted fantail its first scientific name, anchoring a lineage that now sits among more than 60 fantail species first grouped under Rhipidura in 1827. This early classification shows how a single discovery can spark a whole family of birds we still study today.
• At roughly 19 cm (7.5 in) from beak to tail, this tiny passerine has a fan-shaped tail with white edges as it darts through undergrowth, a visual cue that lets birdwatchers spot it in dense Indian forests.
• The bird builds a small cup nest in a tree and lays exactly three eggs each breeding season, a clutch size that balances the effort of feeding insect prey with the chances of each chick surviving.
• A male’s song is a two-part pattern: first 5–6 trilling notes that rise and fall, then 4–5 notes climbing to a final high pitch. This fixed sequence acts like a sonic fingerprint, helping researchers locate the species even when it stays hidden in scrub.
• Although the call repeats year after year, tiny variations accumulate so that after 4–5 years the melody sounds almost new. This gradual shift reveals how even seemingly static animal songs evolve subtly over a few generations.
