• White-nosed coatis act as pollinators for the balsa tree, slipping their noses into the blossoms to sip nectar. During feeding the pollen coats their faces, and as they move through the forest it detaches and spreads to other flowers. The tree supplies the coatis with vital water and nutrition when other resources are scarce, while the coatis boost the tree's reproduction through this pollination service.
• Unlike many of their Procyonidae cousins, such as raccoons and kinkajous, white-nosed coatis are diurnal and therefore do much of their foraging during daylight hours. This daytime habit lets them hunt and search the forest floor for small vertebrates, fruits, carrion, insects, snakes and eggs. Their ability to climb trees easily and use their long tail for balance further expands the range of food they can obtain while the forest is bright.
• A self-sustaining population of white-nosed coatis now lives in southern Florida despite being non-native. The earliest museum record is an escaped captive specimen dated 1928, and numerous later escapes have been documented. Since the 1970s sightings have been regular across a wide area, with live and dead individuals of various ages found, providing probable evidence of breeding and a well-established population.
• White-nosed coatis live in a wide range of forest types, from tropical dry broadleaf woods to moist broadleaf forests, and they can be found from sea level up to 3,000 m. Their distribution stretches from Flagstaff in Arizona and New Mexico, through Mexico and Central America, to the north-western edge of Colombia near Panama.
• Adult white-nosed coatis typically weigh between 4 kg and 6 kg, with a total nose-to-tail length of about 110 cm, half of which is tail. Females at the small end of the size spectrum can be as light as 3.1 kg, while the largest males may reach up to 9 kg.
