• A western tiger swallowtail caterpillar spends its first days of life eating its own eggshell, then moves on to willow and cottonwood leaves — but it only eats at night. By day it hides motionless on the underside of branches, invisible to wasps and parasitic flies that hunt by sight. This split schedule lets it survive in a landscape where a caterpillar is lunch.
• The adult butterfly emerges from its chrysalis with wet, crumpled wings the size of a postage stamp. In 30 minutes those wings are dry and fully formed — intricate patterns of black stripes and electric yellow already perfect. Papilio rutulus doesn't grow or reshape its wings after that first half-hour; what hatches is what flies.
• Male western tiger swallowtails patrol riverbeds and canyon bottoms looking for females, flying at knee height in a behaviour called 'hilltopping' — they perch on ridges and wait instead of searching. A male will chase almost any moving shadow, mistaking bats and birds for mates, burning 40% of his energy on failed romances in a single afternoon.
• When a caterpillar is threatened, two orange scent organs called osmeterium pop out from behind its head like a snake's fangs. These release a smell sharp enough to make a human wrinkle their nose from 30 centimetres away — bitter almond mixed with rotten fruit. Predators that have tasted one learn fast to leave Papilio rutulus alone.
• A western tiger swallowtail lives only 6 to 14 days as an adult, yet it must find a mate, lay eggs on the exact right host plant, and navigate the Mojave Desert or Sierra Nevada foothills without refuelling stations. Those wings that took 30 minutes to dry will wear transparent by day 10, the scales rubbed away by air friction, yet the butterfly keeps flying until it simply can't anymore.
