• A western grey kangaroo can leap 9 metres in a single bound and reach speeds of 70 km/h — faster than a car in a school zone — by using its massive tail as a counterbalance and fifth limb. Watch one gallop and you'll see the tail doesn't just swing; it plants into the ground with each leap, doing the work of a spring. This isn't hopping. It's a completely different kind of locomotion that only kangaroos do, and it burns less energy than four-legged running even at top speed.
• Mother kangaroos give birth to a joey the size of a jellybean — about 2 centimetres long and weighing under 1 gram — then the newborn crawls blindly into the pouch where it feeds for up to 8 months. The placenta doesn't fully nourish the developing joey like it does in most mammals; the pouch does. Evolution didn't give kangaroos a womb that works better. It gave them a living external incubator instead.
• Western greys are born in soil that receives less than 300 millimetres of rain a year, yet they survive by extracting water from grass so efficiently that they rarely drink. Their kidneys concentrate urine to nearly twice the strength of seawater, and their blood can tolerate salt and water loss that would kill most mammals. In a landscape where other grazers depend on waterholes, kangaroos simply eat and move on.

Yet kangaroos came from a completely different mammal branch and never shared an ancestor that had this ability.
