• A wattled crane can live 40 years in the wild—longer than most people keep a pet—yet fewer than 4,000 pairs exist in Africa today. These birds mate for life, raising one chick every two years across wetlands that are vanishing faster than they can breed. Lose the swamps, and you lose the cranes.
• Those red fleshy wattles hanging from their throat aren't decoration—they swell and flush during courtship dances, a visual megaphone that lets cranes signal across misty wetlands. Combined with their haunting, honking call that carries for kilometres, a wattled crane announces itself with the intensity of a bird that knows empty landscapes mean extinction.
• Standing 1.6 metres tall with a wingspan of 2.4 metres, a wattled crane is Africa's largest crane and one of the continent's rarest birds. • Wattled cranes specialise in hunting frogs and aquatic insects in shallow water, using their long bills like tweezers to pluck prey from mud with surgical precision. • In 1994, only 250 wattled cranes were thought to exist—a population collapse so severe scientists debated whether the species could recover. Since then, habitat protection has tripled their numbers to around 8,000 individuals.
