• A viperfish's fangs are so long they don't fit inside its mouth — two needle-sharp teeth jut upward from the lower jaw even when closed, piercing the roof of its own skull. These 0.2-inch daggers are angled inward, a design that locks struggling prey in place. Evolution has hollowed out grooves in its cranium so the teeth slide in without stabbing the brain.
• Living 600 metres down where sunlight dies, the viperfish hunts in absolute darkness using bioluminescence as bait — a glowing organ dangles from its spine like a fishing rod, pulsing to attract smaller fish into a trap.
