• The variegated fritillary can produce two or three generations each year, a pace far faster than its close relatives that manage only one. This rapid breeding results in adults being on the wing for many months in warmer regions, and in the southern part of its range the butterfly may be seen flying from April through October.
• Unlike many fritillaries that stay put, the variegated fritillary is nomadic, moving from field to field in search of suitable resources. It is commonly encountered in open, disturbed habitats such as clover and alfalfa fields, pastures, waste areas, roadsides and mountain meadows. These habitats provide abundant nectar sources and host plants, enabling the butterfly to complete its life cycle across a patchwork landscape.
• The caterpillars of the variegated fritillary feed on passionflowers, a host choice that links the species taxonomically to the flamboyant heliconians. Passionflower species such as Passiflora caerulea, Passiflora foetida and Passiflora incarnata are listed among its host plants, providing leaves, flowers and stems for the larvae.
• The variegated fritillary flies close to the ground with a rapid, darting motion, yet even while perched or feeding it is extremely difficult to approach. This skittish behaviour gave the genus its name, taken from the Greek euptoietos meaning "easily scared". Its low, swift flight is typical of open, disturbed habitats such as clover fields and roadsides where it is often seen.
• The variegated fritillary exploits an unusually wide range of host plants, feeding its larvae on both passionflowers and several violet species. Recorded hosts include Passiflora caerulea, Passiflora foetida and Passiflora incarnata as well as Viola sororia, Viola bicolor and Viola tricolor subspecies. Caterpillars consume the leaves, flowers and stems of these plants, gaining the red and black coloration described for the species.
