• A vagrant darter can fly in any direction at will — forwards, backwards, sideways, even hovering perfectly still — because its four wings work independently of each other. A mosquito standing still is invisible to them, but the instant it moves, the dragonfly locks on and intercepts it in under a second.
• Male vagrant darters engage in aerial dogfights with rivals that would exhaust any creature with a conventional heart. They can accelerate from 0 to full speed in a single wingbeat, perform sharp turns at speeds exceeding 30 kilometres per hour, and dive from 6 metres high. All this happens in a body weighing barely 1 gram — equivalent to a chimpanzee carrying a car on its back.
• A vagrant darter's entire adult life lasts only 6 to 8 weeks, yet it spends the first 1 to 3 years underwater as a nymph, hunting tadpoles and aquatic insects. The nymph is the true predator — a scaled underwater missile with extendable jaws that harpoon prey with explosive speed. When the adult finally emerges, it has already been alive longer as a water creature than it will be as a flier.
