About the Torrent Duck

The torrent duck (Merganetta armata) is a compact, 43–46-centimetre (17–18 in) waterfowl that clings to the high-altitude rivers of the Andes. The male’s striking black-and-white head, red bill and dark wings edged with a green speculum give him a bold silhouette against the white-water rapids, while the female wears orange underparts, a grey crown and a yellower bill. Juveniles are a muted grey above and whitish below, blending into the mist-shrouded riverbanks where they learn to dive. These ducks nest in sheltered caves and crevices along fast-flowing mountain streams, usually above 1,500 metres (4,900 ft), and they defend territories with a shrill male whistle and a throatier female call. Their powerful swimming and diving abilities let them pursue invertebrates even in turbulent currents, a surprising trait for a bird that rarely flies more than short distances and is not particularly wary when approached. Beyond their dramatic habitat, torrent ducks exhibit subtle regional differences. The Chilean nominate subspecies M. a. armata displays a grey back and blackish underparts with a chestnut belly, while the Colombian M. a. colombiana is paler underneath with streaked grey-brown flanks. The Peruvian M. a. leucogenis shows a mosaic of plumage, from entirely black underparts in the turneri morph to intermediate shades, and only Chilean males bear a distinctive black “teardrop” beneath the eye. These variations underscore a species finely tuned to the roaring, oxygen-rich streams of the Andes, where every splash reveals a duck perfectly adapted to life in the torrent.
